House and Senate budget negotiators have reached a compromise $20.2 billion General Fund budget deal for the upcoming fiscal year that provides 1.2 percent raises to state employees and teachers while restoring $251 million in previous cuts to public education.

The Senate budget directs NC DOT to tax ALL ferries, including the Currituck-Knots Island ferry and the Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry. It directs DOT to ignore Governor's Perdue moratorium and begin to collect the ferry taxes, effective July 1, 2012.

On Monday, April 23, 2012 the NC Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Transportation met in Raleigh. Rep. Tim Spears (Democrat, Washington County) proposed legislation to repeal any new or increased ferry tolls.

Anti-Ferry Tax efforts are expanding in Beaufort, Hyde, and Pamlico Counties. Because we are working to coordinate among the 3 counties, we are pushing back the date for the trip to Raleigh.
